Relay For Life - Submission Deadline Sept. 15 |
 Relay For Life rallies communities to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and raise funds to eliminate cancer. Lasting overnight as team members take turns walking around a track, the Relay inspires, entertains and touches the hearts of all who participate.
Phi Theta Kappa encourages chapters to continue to support Relay For Life as part of the Society’s Civic Engagement Initiative. Our goal as an Honor Society is to raise $10 million for the American Cancer Society by Phi Theta Kappa’s 100th Anniversary International Convention in 2018. Phi Theta Kappa chapters have already raised more than $2.8 million.
Start a team and submit the Chapters participation form by September 15, 2010.

92nd Annual Convention Highlights |
Celebrating Honors in Action
More than 3,600 representatives from 500-plus chapters gathered in Orlando in early April to celebrate Honors in Action and the 92nd Annual Convention of Phi Theta Kappa. In a whirlwind three days of excellence, attendees gained scholarly insights in the Honors in Action Academy and six rounds of Educational Forums; saw leadership in action as constituents elected International Officers, ACA and Alumni Advisory Council representatives; learned how engagement in service can make a difference; and met from members and advisors from all around the world.

American Chemical Society Scholarships |

Chemistry Scholarships for African American, Hispanic, and American Indian Students
ACS awards renewable scholarships to underrepresented minority students who want to enter the fields of chemistry or chemistry-related fields. Awards of up to $5,000* are given to qualified students based on academic standing, financial need, career objective, leadership skills, and involvement in school activities and community service.
If you are an African American, Hispanic, or American Indian pursuing a college degree in the chemical sciences or chemical technology, you may be eligible.
Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for a scholarship through the ACS Scholars Program, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Be African-American, Hispanic/Latino, or American Indian
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident
- Be a full-time student at a high school or accredited college, university, or community college
- Demonstrate high academic achievement in chemistry or science (Grade Point Average 3.0, "B" or better)
- Demonstrate financial need according to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form (FAFSA) and the Student Aid Report (SAR) form
- Be a graduating high school senior or college freshman, sophomore or junior intending to or already majoring in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering or a chemically-related science OR intending to or already pursuing a degree in chemical technology
- Be planning a career in the chemical sciences.
*Please note that students intending to enter Pre-Med programs or pursuing a degree in Pharmacy are not eligible for this scholarship.

National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network Internship |
|
Here is a great interdisciplinary internship opportunity for students in many science and engineering majors. It pays well, covers transportation and housing, and includes attendance at a research conference.
During the summer of 2010, the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network will host a Research Experience for Undergraduates (NNIN REU) Program from June through August, hiring approximately 70 interns to work at the 14 NNIN sites across the country. They are looking for engineering and science students with broad interests across disciplines focusing on nanotechnology. |

Summer Interships and Research Conference |

If you do, you can attend the Science Educational Equity (SEE) Summer Enrichment Conference on December 5th, 2009 in the Alumni Center, Sacramento State from 8:00am to 3:00pm . The conference is free, and breakfast and lunch are provided.

What is this conference about? Giving you the best information to help you obtain summer internships or research opportunities. You can talk with representatives from programs across the nation, attend workshops on developing strong applications, and hear from past participants. A guide book listing many programs nationwide will be distributed to those in attendance. |

Get Published - PTK Nota Bene Submissions |

Nota Bene, Latin for "note well," is Phi Theta Kappa's honors anthology. It recognizes outstanding writing of Phi Theta Kappa members and demonstrates to the literary public the academic excellence and commitment to scholarship found at two-year colleges. The first issue of Nota Bene was published in 1994; it has been published annually ever since.
The deadline for the 2010 Nota Bene is December 4, 2009. Only Phi Theta Kappa members may submit manuscripts, and manuscripts should be submitted while a member is enrolled in an associate-degree program. Qualitative and quantitative research papers, poetry, short stories, essays and drama are accepted for consideration. No single entry may exceed 2,500 words. The author of the manuscript judged most outstanding will receive the Citation Scholarship, a stipend of $1,000. Authors of four manuscripts will be named recipients of Reynolds Scholarship Awards, stipends of $500 each.

Internships - UC Davis Center for Biophotonics Science and Technology |

The UC Davis Center for Biophotonics Science and Technology (CBST) has an almost unbelievable opportunity available for Los Rios MESA students. Applications has been extended to November 15th.
They will be selecting 16 - 20 community college students in a broad range of science and engineering fields to work in intern positions for two weeks during our winter break – January 4 through 15. Every MESA student should apply! If interest is high enough, they hope to add a second program, which means another 20 spots for local students.
A $600 stipend is provided. Biophotonics is the study of the interaction of light or radiant energy with biological material – thus it employs the information and techniques from many physical and biological sciences.
They know that community college students are early in their studies, and they are going to select those who show desire and interest in learning about science and research, and are still exploring their fields of interest, not necessarily the most accomplished students. So there is no reason not to apply.
All application materials – application form, resume, personal statement and letter of recommendation – are due November 15th.
